The Character Basics.
Full Name: Gemma Rose Cathleen Doyle
Gemma - Means "precious stone" in Italian
Rose - In part it means simply "rose" from the word for the fragrant flower (derived from Latin rosa). However, it may have originally been a short form of names beginning with the Germanic element hros meaning "horse".
Cathleen - Variant of Kathleen which is the Anglicized form of Caitlin which is the Irish form of Cateline, the Old French form of Katherine which means pure
Doyle - From an Irish surname which was derived from Ó Dubhghaill meaning "descendent of Dubhghall". The name Dubhghall means "dark stranger" in Gaelic.
Gemma Doyle means "jewel who is descended from a dark stranger".

Personality: Gemma is a vampire who never became cynical. She was called a English rose in Bombay when she was human and she still acts the same way. Nothing had changed her. What drew Nathanial to her was her sweetness, knowledge, warmth, grace and beauty. She doesn't lose her temper too much and is a well tempered and mannered girl.

At The Back Of The Mind.

History: Gemma Rose Cathleen Doyle was born in London, England to Virginia and John Doyle on June 21, 1879. She was to be their only daughter and was preceded by a brother, Thomas Henry Doyle (called Tom). Her family moved to Bombay, India just after she was born and she spend most of her life there. She had a peaceful, quiet childhood in India, her father's daughter, best friends with Tom but her life was to change. When she was eleven, Tom was sent to England for school and her world was shaken. Her best friend was gone away. He wrote to her often but she still missed him like crazy.
On Gemma's sixteenth birthday, she and her mother were going to a family friend's house for a little party. Her mother was stopped by someone and was told that someone was in Bombay. Virginia told Gemma to go home with the housekeeper. Gemma said no and wanted to still go to the little party. Virginia bribed her and said Gemma could have champagne at a celebration at their house that night. Gemma still wanted to go to the party. Virginia gave her daughter her necklace, a strange amulet in the shape of the Crescent Eye, that she calls her good luck charm and tells Gemma to go home. She refuses and runs away. Her mother killed herself because of who was in the city.
Gemma became lost and when she asked for directions, the man shooed her away and closed his door in her face. It was then he found her. His name was Nathanial Crawford. He seemed like another English gentleman, around her age, who was living in India with his parents...but then he mentioned his parents were not with him anymore. She just thought it meant that they died. The cholera was starting to spread. People were dropping like flies, she thought Nathanial's parents just died of the cholera. He became a friend to her after her mother's murder. He was the first to call her Rose, for he said she was just as fair, if not fairer than, the flower...and she smelled like them. Gemma wore Rose perfume so she figured it was just that...her blood also smelled like Roses to him...
After several weeks of knowing Nathanial, Gemma felt herself falling for him and soon she realized she was in love with him. It was her first love and everyone, including Gemma, could tell Nathanial was head over heels for Gemma. One night, Gemma finally let Nathanial kiss her. It was her first kiss so she didn't know what to expect. Nathanial accidently bit her lip, causing it to bleed a little. He said he would take care of it. She didn't know what he ment but she noticed his eyes change, from the normal dark brown to a light hazel color. She knew something was going on. He kissed her lips once more, getting another taste of her blood, and then left a trail of kisses down her cheek to her neck. He easily found the vein and he bit her. Gemma had no idea what was going on but Nathanial wanted to make her his vampiress...but Gemma didn't know that. All she knew was that she felt weaker and weaker. When he pulled back, she was ready to scream. She saw his fangs. She knew what he was. Nathanial was a vampire. He clamped his wrist, which he had already bitten into so his blood flowed, on her mouth and told her to drink, his other hand calmly stroking her cheek. She did as she was told. She drank from him, turning her into a vampire.
Gemma couldn't stay with her father, who was now a laudanum addict, not could she go to her brother, who was in London, so she ran away with Nathanial. They traveled the world and saw everything she ever dreamed about seeing. It turned out that Nathanial was a two hundred year old vampire, though he looked only eighteen. The two vampires settled in Paris, France and lived there for many years (thankfully Gemma was pretty much speaking French since she was very little). They couldn't have been more happier.
After many, many years, Nathanial became tired of Gemma's company for a reason unknown to Gemma. He left her alone, to "see the world again" but promised to one day return to her. Gemma was heartbroken. She couldn't stay in Paris any more. The city of love without the one she still loved. She did her research and heard there was a comunity of vampires in Dark City. She backed her things and was on her way to Dark. She left a note for Nathanial.

You said you wanted to see the world and I respect that. But I can not stay in Paris without you. I am leaving on the next flight so I do not have much time to write this to you. I am going to Dark City. It is a city in America that has a community of vampires, so I will not be alone. I will always love you, even if I do find other love in America. I will wait for you. I will not end my life as vampire until the day you want to. Even if that is never. I hope to see you again. I hope I did not bore you so much that you now hate me...but perhaps this bit of a break in our relationship is healthy. I mean, it has been one hundred thirteen years since you turned me and we have been together ever since then. Perhaps this is for the best. I will always love you in some way, Nat, never forget that. It pains me to be away from you ...but perhaps it is for the best.
